Minor Effects on Skin
Moderately hard water is not a health concern. However, it can contribute to minor issues for those with sensitive skin. The minerals can interfere with the rinsing of soap, potentially leaving a film that can cause mild dryness or irritation. It’s more of a comfort and cosmetic issue than a health risk.
Filtration Guide for Moderate Water (5.0 GPG)
With moderate hardness, a whole-house system is typically overkill and not financially justifiable. Simple, targeted solutions are usually sufficient.
- Recommendation: For better-tasting water and to protect small appliances like coffee makers, a quality pitcher filter (e.g., Brita, PUR) or a faucet-mount filter is an excellent choice. An under-sink filter is a step up for dedicated drinking water purification.
- Cost & Payback: A whole-house softener is not recommended. The potential annual savings are only $54, meaning a $1,500 system would take nearly 28 years to pay for itself. Stick to simpler, cheaper solutions.
- Bottled Water: If you buy bottled water for taste, an under-sink Reverse Osmosis (RO) system or even a quality pitcher filter offers a much faster return on investment and reduces plastic waste.
